Primary. Red, yellow, blue. Each blends with another to make secondary colors.

Secondary. Orange, Green, Purple. each blends with another to make tertiary colors.

Tertiary.
IE:
russet (red gray)
Citron (yellow gray)
slate (blue gray).
Each blends with another to make quaternary colors.
(Tertiary is essentially (very simplified) the more neutral version of primary.)

Now STAY WITH MEEEE…

Quaternary.
IE:
Plum (orange gray)
Olive (green gray)
Sage (purple gray)
Each blends with another to make quinary colors.
(Quaternary is essentially the more neutral version of secondary.)

This becomes a pattern until you can no longer distinguish a specific color. Think of them like ranks. I will go to 8 or I guess “octinary” if we want to giggle at it.

1 base
2 mix of base
3 mix of 2(resembles 1)
4 mix of 3(resembles 2)
5 mix of 4(resembles 3)
6 mix of 5(resembles 4)
7 mix of 6(resembles 5)
8 mix of 7(resembles 6)

Because each level is incorporating more of each primary color in different values, each will slowly turn more and more neutral, as what happens when bringing all primary colors together at the same time. Intermediate colors can be similar, in their own way. They just seem like they have their own pattern.

IE:
orange + red = vermilion
Vermilion + red = blood orange
blood orange + red= scarlet

This is me guessing names that make since in that family so bear with me.

Anyway, that's how I see it. Let me know if you feel the same!
