Since I have always thought that the seasons refer to a specific - yes, specific - time of year defined by the solstices and equinoxes, they logically should be classified proper nouns just as the names of the days of the week and months of the year (which are arbitrary names not even defined by physical phenomena). For me this settled it and I insisted on capitalizing the names of the seasons for years. Then I found out something that I did not know, that the meteorological use of the seasons is based on the annual temperature cycle, in the Northern Hemisphere the coldest period is winter: December, January, February, followed by spring: March, April, May; .... Ok, now I am not only angry, but outraged. Since the seasons are defined differently in various applications, and thus are not specific, I have to concede (oh, do I hate this) they should be considered common nouns.

(Now, as to when to capitalize sun, earth and moon.... It drives me crazy when in publications like the New York Times, in the very same article, they use moon in one place and Moon in another when in both instances they are referring specifically, and not in any way generally, to earth's moon, that is the Moon, and likewise for Sun/sun and Earth/earth.)
